Agricultural Trusts

The Agricultural Trusts Division was established to manage and coordinate the communication process between the Minister for Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development and Agricultural Industry Trusts. The Agricultural Industry Trusts are bodies that were established after the disbandment of the former control boards during the market deregulation process in 1996. The assets of the control boards were then transferred into these Agricultural Trusts.

The Agricultural Trusts Division is responsible for the nomination process of the Ministerial trustees, and advice the Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development with proposed names who then do appointment.

Industry Transformation Support

Through the Council, the Transformation Review Committee (TRC) was established in 2014, to independently review, comment and provide inputs to the transformation business plans supplied by the industries; to monitor the transformation activities supported by the industries, and to establish how government can collaborate with industries in support of transformation.

New Developments

Transformation Review Committee

  • A successful workshop was convened,
  • Draft transformation guidelines were shared with the industry, and inputs were received,
  • The following industry transformation proposals were received and responded to:
    • Cotton South Africa,
    • Milk South Africa
    • Red Meat Industry Forum,
    • South African Poultry Association (on eggs),

Industry Trust Developments

  • Oil and Protein Seeds Development Trust has approved the appointment of a second Ministerial Trustee to serve in the Board of Trustees,
  • Industry stakeholder agreed to the appointment of two Directors to serve on South Africa Cultivar and Technology Agency (SACTA), representing the Minister.

The process of appointment of Ministerial Trustees has started and an announcement will be made in due course for the following Trusts:

  • Red Meat Research Development Trust (RMRDT),
  • Potato Industry Development Trust,
  • South Africa Cultivar and Technology Agency (SACTA)
